Is there any point to a career in webdesign?

With the market saturated with "do-it-yourself" books and internet template sites, is it still possible for one to make a reasonable living as a web designer? Sometimes I wonder.
Yes. Most people who want to learn web-design do not do well. They are at best proficient in HTML at the end, and rarely figure out the backend stuff.

Your task is to learn how to stand out from the crowd. Perhaps you need to specialize in one given thing really well, or perhaps it is to be a "jack-of-all-trades" type.
It doesn’t matter whether it is web design, carpentery, management, etc.
I happen to be in the "jack-of-all" category. Literally anything from house building through to large appliance repair, through to programming (both web and traditional).
Personally, I believe you should find what you enjoy the most, and focus your efforts there. Your drive and resilience will show through, and thus your salary will be commensurate.

Most people can cook to a certain degree. It doesn’t mean they know how to run a restaurant.
