I live in virginia but that is besides the point. I will travel to get the best tattoo artist to draw and design my tattoo. I would also like them to help me brainstorm and find a place to put it. THE OVERALL BEST TATTOO SHOP!

If they are available, pick up some tattoo magazines because there are a lot of phenomenally talented tattoo artists out there . .. .take your time before actually getting it done . .

This question is for the artist community. Yeah, what does it take to become a great artist? Let’s suppose i paint 10 really really good masterpieces in my entire lifetime. Is that enough to make you a good renouned artist who will be remembered for ever? Or is it compulsory to dedicate your life to art and spend a lifetime doing countless good (or just good) paintings? Which of these two?

I would have to agree with both of them, BUT…

There are a few artists in the world whose talent is such that their art work is just spectacular. These people usually have a photographic mind of things around them. They are in a league of their own. BUT…unless they do anything with this talent they have, nobody will ever know they exist. Therefore, you must push yourself into getting your art out into the public for them to see. Unfortunately, this may lead to you working on those "good" paintings and never having the time to master your art disciplines.

Then there are artists who have been great, were okay with their artwork, but took a detour into another form of art. These are the iconic artists who made a niche for themselves. These are the "gimmick" artists who were known for specific art genres. I’m not going to name names because others may disagree with me, but I think you get the jest of it.

Why you picked the number 10 is beyond me. Da Vinci accomplished much in his life, but have you ever thought of all the things he never finished? Michelangelo wanted to be known as a sculptor, but he became known as an artist. Raphael only lived to be 37, but look at all he did in such a short lifetime. My point is, anyone who really wants to can become a well known artist as long as they work hard at it. It’s up to the individual to become great inside to know they are putting forth their best effort in what they do as an artist. To these people, it really doesn’t matter what others think as long as they are doing the best work they can do.

Ok, this might seem such a strange question (well, the second part at least) but I am planning on getting a tattoo in the future and I have no idea how much the tip should be. Also, is it appropriate to hand the cash for the tip directly to the artist them self or should it be given to the person (usually an intern) who rings the total cost up? Advice is greatly appreciated! Much thanks! :)
i would say as a general rule never give a tip intended for one person to another person, no matter where you are. this is money is undocumented (no paper trail: ie receipts) so there is no way to prove that you ever gave the tip or for whom the tip was intended. but yes, tip the artist well and give it directly to them.

Is it necessary to have a BFA and a MFA to become an established artist in India? Does art education play an important role? Is is necessary to have a degree and masters in your portfolio description for people to appreciate your paintings.

Can a self taught artist become an established artist if he has great talent? If he holds exhibition after exhibition, and on the strenght of his art alone, can he prove his art to the world, that education is not everything, inborn talent can also prevail.

Hi there,
Here in western europe, art educations only teach you some way of thinking. You don’t learn how to paint at all. People do look at the resume, but it helps more when they like your work.

If you practice a lot on your own effort, you can gain skills and develop your own style. Of course talent helps. But you also need to practice every day.

Good luck, Evelien

I need to do a project where you talk about an artist that is authentic in a genre, and an artist that is not. Ideas for places to find information would be great too. Any suggestions?

you do realize that you posted this to Visual Arts/Paintings and not Audio?

We all know that artists generally see the "deeper" side of life, but is this all the time, or only when they choose, such as in the process of creating the art? Is the regular person incapable of seeing, or for the most part understanding what the artist sees? Is the artistic perception a part of every person that just needs exercise to be accessed? How do you truly know if you are an artist?

These are my general questions, which of course lead into many others.

No, they don’t see any "deeper" side of life; they just have more creative imaginations than many of us.

I think my answer to your other question also sheds some light here.. science is discovering that regular people are incapable of accessing their right brain (which is used in novel and creative thinking) as much as people with schizotypal personalities. It’s not a choice, it is a personality trait.. as far as science has been able to determine it is also genetic. http://www.livescience.com/health/050907_schizotype_creative.html

For example, if I sync an Eminem album to my iPod, under the artist list it will show something like this:

Eminem
Eminem/Obie Trice
Eminem/Steve Berman

I want the Eminem/Obie Trice and the Eminem/Steve Berman onto JUST the Eminem artist category.

I tried dragging the albums onto each other on iTunes to combine the songs, but it doesn’t work.

So how do I do this?

Thank you.

Where it says the artist, click on it. It SHOULD open a text-box like thing. Then just write Emeniem. It should change to one artist.

Does an artist require a business license if you are selling paintings on ebay, or an online gallery?
I am a visual artist; I paint with pastels, and I want to sell my paintings and giclees in online galleries and on ebay. I am worried that if I make over a certain amount that I am required to have a business license or some other legal issue. I am also worried about how to keep my taxes affordable and legal.

Regardless of where you sell; if you buy/or make items to then sell for profit -then this makes you a Business.
It’s not the amount of money that you make (or lose in the first year of set up- in fact a good accountant can help you "lose" money so that you may actually have a tax rebate)its the fact that you will be trading and have taxes to pay (when you are actually in profit)
A good accountant will advise you of your obligations and will more than save you what his yearly fees cost

As a Business seller trading on the internet you need to be legally offering your buyers their rights under the distance selling regulations (google DSR regulations)
On ebay you are required to register as a Business seller from day one, and with the tax man within 3 months
Unsure if you are in UK; but you can finfd business info on many sites such as Business Link, HMRC (Customs and Taxes)

I want to become an artist and a film director/screenwriter. Can I become both or can I choose only one path? What can I do to be both? How many years will it take? Do I have to go to university?

Any creative job is artistic. So by becoming a director you become an artist. If you want to be a director (film or video) the best path is a degree. Most film directors earn a degree (four years), but it can also be done without a degree. Some of us start off in local television. Local TV stations hire people with or without degrees. Keep in mind that most of what you see on television is filmed.
