I don’t know much about web page creation but I’ve managed to put together a very humble site. While I’m glad I set my width to about 980 pixels, the sides are barren. I’d like to change the color of the background on only the sides with a slight gradient transition, like you see here on Yahoo answers. Is there a relatively straight forward way to do that such that a beginner could handle it?

What you see on both sides of many sites is either the background image or color set for the "body" tag only in CSS. Since you have a wrapper div set to 980 pixels, any background you set to the "body" tag in CSS will be seen on both sides and at top/bottom if you set any margin for the wrapper div.

Background Image Code:

For the body tag example:

body {
width: XXpx;
height: YYpx;
margin: 0 auto;
background: #fff url(image_name.jpg) no-repeat center scroll;
}

That is the proper CSS code for a non-tiled image where the contents scroll with the background image. Change "#fff" to preferred bg color. Change "scroll" to "fixed" if you want page contents to scroll over bg image. Be sure to set proper width/height to provide minimum page size to display bg image. Put the CSS as is on an external CSS file. If using embedded CSS, then place CSS between the style tags and place those style tags between the head tags of the page.

For a tiled image, change to:

body {
width: XXpx;
height: YYpx;
margin: 0 auto;
background: #fff url(image_name.jpg) repeat top left scroll;
}

Put that CSS on an external CSS file if you have more than one page. Put the CSS between the style tags and place them between the head tags if using it on one page. Style another tag other than the body tag if you are using a div wrap container. Should you want the contents of page to scroll over the background image, change "scroll" to "fixed".

Since you want an image gradient, then use an image slice of the gradient so you can repeat it for the whole page. The wrapper div will hide what is behind it unless you set its background to transparent.

You CAN use divs side-by-side to have images/colors on the left/right divs and something entirely different for the wrapper div. All easily done.

I’ve tried to find information on significant archaeological sites which centre around the way the site was excavated & not the site itself. I’ve tried so many archaeological sites, but I can’t find much information on how they were excavated - which is what my assignment particularly asks for.

Do you know any good websites that have information on the EXCAVATION of a famous archaeological site? Or do you know any good archaeological sites which were famous for their excavation?

If I remember correctly, we’re both in Year 11 and in Queensland, right? Because that sounds like an assignment I actually completed last term. I don’t know if this will be helpful or not, but I’ll tell you what I based mine on and maybe it will help you think of other ideas;

I focused my essay on Tollund Man, in Denmark. While my assignment did discuss that actual excavation, I also talked about how his discovery was significant in the fact that it led to the advances in modern scientific archaeological methods. It was actually quite interesting because he wasn’t the only bog body found in that particular area; Elling Woman was another. Although, researching her to tie it into my assignment was a bit of a pain.

The only other thing I thought about when reading this, was Otzi, the iceman. There’s been some really interesting documentaries done on him and they talk about the excavation *and* dating methods and techniques.

Sorry if I just went completely off topic and led you in the wrong direction, but sometimes I find ideas can stem off that way. : ) Good luck with your assignment!

You know how you cite a book after a sentence, (Smith 40). How do you cite a webpage? Do you put the last name of the editor of the site AND the name of the webpage, or do you just put the webpage?

Creating sites is something that i am very good at. Since i am good at it. I would like to use this skill of mine to earn money online. I would like to create a site that i would earn money from. But i don’t know what kind of site it should be. I do have ideas but they are not solid.
